Heimlich for a Conscious Person
Conscious = awake and aware of what is happening.
Unconscious = not aware of what is happening to them.

Signs of choking:
A.. Discoloration of lips (blue).
B.. Holding their throat.
C.. Make a high pitch sound from throat.
D.. Cough is poor.

METHOD:
1.. Tell someone to go to get help (911) and come back to you.
2.. Can I help you? (You need permission to touch them).
“I know heimlick or first aid. Can I help you?”
YES = proceed to the next step.
NO = wait until they go unconscious.
3.. Approach the person from behind.
4.. Spread their feet apart and put one of your feet in between their feet.
5.. To landmark:
A.. Feel for their hips.
B.. Move your hands towards the center of their body.
C.. Find the belly button.
6.. Make a fist with your THUMB INSIDE THE FIST.
7.. Put baby finger side of fist ON BELLY BUTTON.
8.. ROLL fist upwards until THUMB SIDE TOUCHES BODY.
(Fist should be under diaphragm.)
9.. Put other hand around the end of the fist.
10. Pull IN and UP 5 times.
11. If this doesn’t work, re-landmark and do 5 more thrusts.
12.. Continue doing thrusts until food comes up OR person goes unconscious.
