Grade 11 Biology University Preparation Course Outline
Unit 1 Diversity of Living Things
All living things can be classified according to their anatomical and physiological characteristics.
Human activities affect the diversity of living things in ecosystems.
Unit 2 Evolution
Evolution is the process of biological change over time based on the relationships between species and their environments.
The theory of evolution is a scientific explanation based on a large accumulation of evidence.
Technology that enables humans to manipulate the development of species has economic and environmental implications.
Unit 3 Genetic Processes
Genetic and genomic research can have social and environmental implications.
Variability and diversity of living organisms result from the distribution of genetic materials during the process of meiosis.
Unit 4 Animals: Structure and Function
Groups of organs with specific structures and functions work together as systems, which interact with other systems in the body.
The development and uses of technology to maintain human health are based, in part, on the changing needs of society.
Unit 5 Plants: Anatomy, Growth, and Function
Plants have specialized structures with distinct functions that enable them to respond and adapt to their environment.
Plant variety is critical to the survival and sustainability of ecosystems.

School and Classroom Policies:
The students must complete 1 independent study unit (ISU) and 1 final written exam. Failure to hand in ISU or attend final exam will result in a mark of zero unless a doctor’s / emergency note is provided and verified.
Appropriate and respectful behavior: one person speaks at a time. Put-downs and bullying will not be tolerated
cell phone and personal electronic devices are only to be used for academic purposes in class
active participation, positive interaction
preparation for class (textbook/binders out/computers to note from last class; notes neat, organized)
punctuality and regular attendance
completion of homework and assignments within the time limits established (Occasionally you will have to finish work at home. This is non-negotiable. Failure to finish work in a timely manner rewards you with time spent in class before or after school finishing what you need to finish. It’s best to work in class. Work handed in that is significantly below what a student can achieve will be handed back and will be completed again. It will be much easier to do it well the first time!)
work/tests/assignments missed must be made up immediately upon your return to school
it is the student’s responsibility to arrange when work missed can be submitted
work missed due to truancy will be deemed INCOMPLETE. Incomplete marks become zeros if the work is not completed by the end of the term.
academic honesty
arrange for extra help with your teacher or a tutor when it is necessary
If you have any questions or concerns regarding these policies please contact the classroom teacher.
Learning Skills:
Learning skills are crucial to academic, career and personal success. It is expected that the students display good work habits. Homework checks, attendance and punctuality are to be observed throughout the year. Students will be assessed continually on the learning skills:
Responsibility (completes and submits class work, homework and assignments according to agreed-upon timelines, takes responsibility for and manages own behavior, fulfills commitments within the learning environment)
Organization (devises and follows and plan for completing tasks, establishes priorities and manages time to achieve goals)
Independent Work (independently monitors, assesses and revises plans to complete tasks and meet goals, uses class time appropriately to complete tasks, follows instructions with minimal supervision)
Collaboration (accepts equitable share of work in a group, responds positively to ideas, opinions, values and traditions of others, works with others to resolve conflicts and build consensus)
Initiative (looks for and acts on new ideas for learning, demonstrates curiosity and interest in learning, approaches new tasks with a positive attitude, recognizes and advocates appropriately for the rights of self and others)
Self-Regulation (sets individual goals, seeks clarification or assistance when needed, reflects critically on strengths and needs, perseveres and makes an effort when responding to challenges)
